Avalon poem
Poem published in An Unexpected Journal King Arthur Legendarium: Prose, Poetry, & Scholarship.
I got inspired to create a substack of my own after reading my local author friend Henry Mitchell’s moving pieces that are always challenging, inspiring, and spiritually nourishing. On this substack format, I will be sharing poems, stories, and non-fiction pieces that have been published, and some that have not been published.
I hope that the reader finds these pieces to be something they can enjoy, and resonate with. This first piece I am sharing is a poem I wrote for An Unexpected Journal, published in June of 2023. The poem was inspired by Norse and Celtic Mythology, Arthurian legend, the writings of Neil Gaiman, C. S. Lewis, J. R.R. Tolkien, George MacDonald, and personal experiences of transcendent joy.
Avalon
The sacred Isle
Separate from the mortal realm
Can be glimpsed by the entrancing spell
Of music, books, and visual art that tells
The alchemy of The Great Bard’s Celtic Song
Its power brings harmony out of chaos
And makes weak mortal Hearts beat strong!
Avalon,
Where The Once And Future King Arthur sleeps,
Until Merlin raises his staff and utters the spell to wake Albion’s King
For the last battle and the defeat Of evil and the powers of darkness
There will be no more weeping nor tears,
Only great rejoicing, love, song, art, and landscapes beyond comprehension
And The Great Bard will humbly wash our weary feet!
